Bio:

Wine: From 1992 through 2001, I represented Underground Wine Journal as a contributing editor, finding and filing my own stories on a wide range of wine and spirits topics. Based out of Oakland, Napa and Sonoma are familiar stomping grounds but my writing has also led me to spend three years visiting practically every wine region of Italy, Europe and even a few days in the Golan Heights seeing how the Israelis coax fine, crisp whites and bold cabernet from vineyards that will likely be part of Syria soon.  Whisky: Through several assignments, visits and articles I found a tremendous appreciation of the passion and dedication that goes into fine whisky and now feel comfortable writing about the virtues of a dram.  Food: I also provide consulting services for a wide range of gastronomic interests. From wine-list creation to private cooking lessons, I enjoy guiding others in their appreciation of pairing food and wine successfully. As an instructor, I want to broaden a client's cooking repertoire and dining experience. Whether that is in planning and executing a special dinner party or just improving the overall enjoyment of their daily meals, my overall philosophy is one of healthy and creative gastronomy.

Patterson, Tim
(510) 848-9158
pattert@pacbell.net
Bio:
Tim Patterson has written professionally about one thing or another for nearly three decades, most recently about wine, spirits and related adult beverages. His writing has appeared in Wine Country Living, The Underground Wine Journal, Diablo, Vineyard & Winery Management, Wines & Vines and WineMaker. He covers Livermore Valley wineries for the Independent and Monterey wineries for Central Coast Adventures. His prejudices include a fondness for underappreciated grapes and undervalued wine regions, and the conviction that the world of wine is better off with a hundred new wine drinkers than with yet another hundred-dollar “cult” bottle. As a reality check, he makes his own award-winning whites (in his basement) and reds (in his garage) under the subterranean cellars label in Berkeley, California -- where the wine country meets what’s left of the 1960s.

Pitcher, Steve

wine2words@aol.com

Steve Pitcher (Wine2words@aol.com) is a freelance wine writer based in San Francisco. He has been writing about wine since the late 1980s, initially as a columnist for six years in the San Francisco Chronicle, later for magazines and Internet publications. He has been a Contributing Editor of Wine News magazine since 1992, and also currently contributes occasionally on a freelance basis to The Chronicle's Wine Section (with several cover stories to his credit), as well as other publications.

In 1995, Pitcher received the Certificate of Commendation from the Academy of Wine Communications, in recognition of "your efforts to educate Americans about wine and your encouragement of higher industry standards."

In 2003, he was awarded the Merit Cross of the German Order of Merit (Verdienstkreuz am Bande des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland) by the President of Germany, Johannes Rau, in recognition of special service to the Federal Republic of Germany. The German Consul General in San Francisco nominated Pitcher for the award "in recognition of his outstanding work for the activities of the German Wine Society in the Bay Area [from which organization he retired after 10 years as its president] and for his success as a wine writer in informing the public of the quality and attraction of German wines." The Order of Merit is the only honor that may be awarded in all fields of endeavor and is the highest tribute the Federal Republic of Germany can pay to individuals -- both German nationals and foreigners -- for services to the nation. It is roughly the equivalent of the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom. Pitcher is the first American wine writer to receive the medal.
