Looking for a recipe for the traditional teacakes I grew up with. These are light, yeasted, sweet breads that are baked, split in half, toasted, and smothered with butter. Never had them in America. These are not cookies...they are closest to Hot Cross Bun consistency.
By the way, I have a pet peeve about the American use of the term "high tea." It's incorrectly applied. High tea is an early dinner that children are served. It's a substantial but simple meal, such as beans on toast, ravioli, etc. What you are referring to is really "afternoon tea," a late afternoon feast of tea, scones, cream, jam, delicate finger sandwiches, mini cakes, and for children coming home from school, very often crumpets and tea cakes toasted, buttered, and jammed (did anyone see Harry Potter?). Many hotels are correcting their usage now, but the problem still persists in the USA. Thanks!
